Common Questions
Q: What is Cellulite?
A: Cellulite is the common term referred to describe fat that is
found in the subdermal or subcutaneous layer of the skin. Cellulite
results in a dimpled, orange peel or cottage cheese like appearance
in the buttocks, hips, thighs and stomach area.
Underneath the epidermis and dermis are three fat layers. Cellulite
develops in the most superficial of these layers, known as
hypodermis or subcutaneous fat layer. This layer is
structurally unique from the others because its fat lobes are
organized into chambers by surrounding strands of connective tissue.
Hormones, not exercise and diet, primarily regulate fat storage and
metabolism in the subcutaneous fat layer.
Deeper below this layer we find what is termed reserve fat (also
known as superficial reserve, sometimes, normal deep fat). This is
the layer that is directly impacted by diet, exercise and VelaShape.
What is VelaShape?
VelaShape is a new FDA approved device which has been shown to
reduce the appearance of cellulite and decrease the circumference of
the thigh without surgery or needles (meaning that you will lose
inches). This body contouring device used at the Manhattan, New York VelaShape
Center uses bipolar radiofrequency energy to reduce the size of the
fat cells and utilizes infrared heat to tighten the skin. A somewhat
similar device was used earlier, yet the VelaShape provides about 10
times more power than its earlier model which was called VelaSmooth.
What are the VelaShape™ advantages compared to other methods?
The advantage is the technology. Today, there are no other methods
available that include a combination of Bi-Polar RF, Infrared Light,
Vacuum and Mechanical Massage like VelaShape™, and no other method
can guarantee the clinically proven results, efficacy and safety in
4 treatments as the VelaShape™. VelaShape™ is the only non-surgical
medical device cleared by the FDA for circumferential reduction.
Who is a candidate for VelaShape?
Anyone (men or women) who have dimpled skin or cellulite and isolated pockets of
fat can be candidates for the procedure at the NYC VelaShape Center.
Since the device can work on many body areas, the uses are almost
limitless. If one wants to reduce a pant size, then treatments of
the abdomen, upper thigh, and hips are recommended. If one wants to
just target cellulite on the back of the legs it can be done as an
isolated and customized area. Tighter arms and in some cases, double
chins can be treated effectively. Bra lines, love handles,
saddlebags, etc. are also popular areas for the VelaShape.
How quickly will I notice a change?
Gradual improvement of the treated area can be seen following your
first non-surgical cellulite treatment - with the skin surface of
the treated area feeling smoother, firmer and tighter. Results in
Circumference and Cellulite Reduction will be most apparent 6-8
weeks following the final VelsShape treatment session.
How many inches can I reduce from my circumference?
In clinical studies, patients report an average reduction of about 1
inch post treatment series.
Is VelaShape treatment safe?
The FDA found and cleared the device as safe and effective for all
skin types and colors. There are no reported short or long-term
health effects.
How much VelaShape is done in one session?
It is advised that each session be limited to no more than 40
minutes. Any given AREA is treated for a total of 10 minutes, and
the areas are fully decided upon at the first consultation.
Consultations are a necessity, because the treatments are completely
customized, and everyone has a different body shape. Therefore, your
choices for targeted areas are unlimited and tailored to your
specific needs.
